Myokines: The Invisible Healers of Strength Training

Muscles aren't just there for movement. They produce messenger molecules — myokines — that affect the entire body.

When we think about muscles, we think about movement. Lifting, pushing, running. But muscles are far more than mechanical tools — they are endocrine organs. They actively produce biochemical messengers that travel through the bloodstream and influence organs, tissues and even the brain.

These messengers are called myokines. And they are one of the most important reasons why strength training builds far more than "just" muscle.

What Are Myokines?

Myokines are proteins and peptides produced and released by muscle cells — above all during and after physical activity. Research on myokines is still relatively young, but the findings so far are remarkable. More than 600 different myokines have been identified to date, many of them with well-understood effect profiles.

The Most Important Myokines and What They Do

Interleukin-6 (IL-6). IL-6 is the best-studied myokine. During training, its concentration in the blood rises sharply. It has anti-inflammatory effects, improves insulin sensitivity and promotes fat metabolism. Chronic, low-grade inflammation — a risk factor for heart disease, diabetes and many other conditions — is actively countered by regularly released IL-6.

Irisin. Irisin is often called the "fat-burner myokine." It activates the conversion of white fat tissue (energy storage) into brown fat tissue (energy consumer), improves blood sugar metabolism and has demonstrated anti-inflammatory properties. Animal studies suggest that irisin also improves bone density.

BDNF (Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor). BDNF is produced by both the brain and the muscles — and it's one of the most important growth factors for nerve cells. Higher BDNF levels are associated with better memory, faster learning and reduced risk of depression. Strength training and endurance training have both been shown to increase BDNF release.

FGF21 (Fibroblast Growth Factor 21). This myokine regulates fat and sugar metabolism, improves insulin sensitivity and has shown life-extending effects in animal studies.

Strength Training as Anti-Inflammatory Medicine

One of the most significant findings from myokine research: regular strength training has a systemic anti-inflammatory effect. Not because it produces painkillers, but because myokines like IL-6 actively reduce chronic, low-grade inflammation — so-called "silent inflammation."

Chronic inflammation is now associated with a wide range of lifestyle diseases: cardiovascular disease, Alzheimer's, type 2 diabetes, certain cancers. Exercise — especially strength training — is one of the most effective non-pharmaceutical interventions against this inflammatory process.

The Practical Takeaway: Moving Is Biochemistry

Myokine research provides a biological explanation for why active people are healthier, happier and mentally sharper — across their entire lives. Training isn't a question of aesthetics. It's a biochemical necessity.
